What is endoscopic cervical spine surgery?

Endoscopic cervical spine surgery is performed in the cervical spine, or upper portion of the spinal column, consisting of vertebrae C1 to C7.

During endoscopic cervical spine surgery, the surgeon makes a small incision in the neck and inserts an endoscope, which is a thin, flexible tube with a light and camera attached to it. The camera provides a clear view of the inside of the neck and the surgical instruments are inserted through additional small incisions.

The surgeon then uses these instruments to decompress the spinal canal. Endoscopic spine surgery allows the surgeon to access and treat damaged vertebrae far less intrusively than other traditional methods of spine surgery, such as fusion.

What is Lumbar Endoscopic Spine Surgery?

Similar to cervical endoscopic spine surgery, lumbar endoscopic spine surgery, sometimes also called endoscopic back surgery, is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat conditions in the lower back, ranging from vertebrae L1-L5. Technically, though endoscopic back surgery can also refer to surgery of the mid-back, or thoracic spine, making it a broader term than lumbar endoscopic spine surgery.

Similar to endoscopic cervical spine surgery, endoscopic lumbar spine surgery involves making small incisions in the spine to insert an endoscope and surgical instruments, in this case in the lumbar region. The surgeon then uses these tools to address issues such as herniated discs, lumbar spinal stenosis, and other lumbar spine conditions.

What can endoscopic spine surgery treat?

Many procedures that once could only be performed as open procedures involving a large incision and a significant amount of cutting and dissecting of muscle tissue and bone, can now be done minimally-invasively using endoscopy.

Not all spine surgeries can be done endoscopically, and not all patients are candidates, but in many cases, the following conditions can be treated with minimally invasive endoscopic spinal procedures:

Types of Endoscopic Spine Surgery

Endoscopic spine surgery is a method of performing surgery rather than a type of surgery itself. This means that it can be used as a way to perform certain surgical procedures of the spine much more efficiently and less invasively, including:

  • Endoscopic laminotomy: Laminotomies are performed to remove portions of the lamina ,the bony arch that cover the spinal cord. Endoscopic laminotomy is often performed on patients with lumbar spinal stenosis who have tried nonsurgical treatments.

  • Endoscopic foraminoplasty: Foraminoplasties are usually used to treat foraminal stenosis, a narrowing of the space between vertebrae.

  • Transforaminal endoscopic discectomy: Part of an intervertebral disc is removed during discectomy surgery. Transforaminal endoscopic discectomy accomplishes this partial disc removal in an ultra-minimally way.

  • Endoscopic rhizotomy: Rhizotomies treat pain and back spasms caused by the medial branch nerve.

  • Endoscopic annuloplasty: If discectomies remove portions of discs, annuloplasties treat tears and damage to the outside of discs, also known as the annulus fibrosus.

Benefits of Endoscopic Spine Surgery

Endoscopic spine surgery has changed the field of spine surgery for the better, making spinal procedures safer, less painful, and easier to recover from. To get an idea of how the procedures are performed, the below videos are a good guide:

Endoscopic spine procedures generally offer the following benefits compared to more invasive surgical interventions:

  • Incisions that are significantly smaller, around ¼ inch instead of around 3 inches in many cases for open surgery

  • Smaller incisions mean less disruption to surrounding tissue and muscles, not to mention faster recover times

  • Minimal blood loss is yet another benefit of ESS compared to open surgery

  • Endoscopic spinal surgery can be performed as an outpatient procedure in most cases under local anesthesia

  • The reduce of postoperative infection is far lower compared to traditional surgical methods

Specialized ESS Experience in Arizona

If you are considering endoscopic spine surgery near Phoenix, you are in the right place.

Not all spine surgeons have mastered this state-of-the-art technique, but Dr. Rafath Baig has undergone extensive training to perform this procedure, ensuring you receive the highest level of care.

That said, surgery is still surgery, and it should always be treated as the final resort or last option to other approaches if any of those other approaches are potentially helpful and healing

T.M. ~ Actual Patient

"Dr Baig and his team are phenomenal. I had a compressed nerve due to a bulging disc and was able to be seen relatively quickly. Surgery was quick and flawless and I have no complaints at all. I truly appreciated how fast they worked to get me seen and out of all the pain I was in! Highly recommend them."

A.H. ~ Actual Patient

"Dr Baig literally changed my life for the better. I had a severely pinched nerve in my neck and needed to get surgery. Immediately at my first consult I felt comfortable and in good hands. I even walked away with a smile on my face during that scary time.

Surgery day couldn’t have gone better. The team he had also had a great bedside manner and helped keep me calm.

After the surgery and in the recovery room, he came in and checked on me and made sure I was all good before releasing me."

S.D. ~ Actual Patient

"Dr Baig was going to be my second opinion for an upcoming scheduled spinal surgery. After my appointment, he will be my surgeon. He gave me a lot of information that was lacking from my other doctors. I felt very comfortable with Dr Baig and his entire office staff. Looking forward to living pain free after we strengthen my bones. It’s going to be a permanent fix and not a bandaid."
